Hey, remember when I asked my adoring fans to get me copies of Gary Brodsky’s karate training comics that he somehow got the Ninja Turtles license for?
Well, apparently at least one person was insane enough to buy those. Thanks, Shin Seiki Evan!
Let’s talk more about Solson publications: Jim Lee, famous for his work on Batman and his own comic imprint Wildstorm, got his start at Solson, inking for…The Solson Christmas Special Samurai Santa?
Did Solson just have a weeaboo thing? Some other titles besides the ninja turtles stuff and samurai santa…the bushido blade of zatoichi walrus, codename ninja, ninjutsu, and Samurai Funnies. I’m curious as to whether Gary actually studied martial arts..I mean, with those dance moves he could get free service at any gym or health club.
*ahem* Solson also published Reagan’s Raiders and THOSE CRAZY PECKERS.
…The logo is Gary Brodsky with the red face mask and a turtle shell. I like to pretend that he wore that while writing this comic. This is an authorized training manual—I presume it was authorized around the same time Solson publications got the license to use the TMNT from Mirage Comics.
Also I like how in this picture Raphael is punching *really* hard and his entire body is tensing. Uh actually, I think Raphael might be having an aneurysm in this picture.
The katana is shown not completely terribly, at least Gary doesn’t make the mistake of showing the straight bladed “ninja sword” that, uh, didn’t actually exist. but then he refers to the pommel as the “pummel” and my respect for Brodsky drops just a bit more.
The last 5 manuals are individual profiles of each turtle and his weapon—we’ve done the beginner shit but now it’s the advanced shit!
