The Locrian minor scale is a type of minor scale in which the 2nd and 5th notes are lowered a semitone, in addition to the 3rd, 6th, and 7th diminished notes of the Aeolian scale (hence why the Locrian mode is sometimes referred to as a “Hyperaeolian” scale.”
In other words, the Locrian minor scale has all notes except for the tonic and 4th note lowered one semitone. In C it goes as follows…
Locrian means an inhabitant of Locris, an ancient Greek region. As in many cases, it seems that this name was given arbitrarily, as this scale does not appear in ancient texts referring to that region. The scale was referred to as the Hyperaeolian until the 1800s.
Locris is best known for the city of Opus, homeland of the mythological hero Ajax.
Fun fact: Locrian mode is identical to the seventh scale degree of an Ionian major scale. In other words, if you start at the seventh note of an Ionian major scale, and play the succeeding notes in the same time signature, you will have a Locrian minor scale...
